“The way you start your day can determine how the rest of it unfolds.”
How My Mornings Used to Start
There was a time when my mornings were rushed, frantic, and reactive. The alarm would ring, and I’d hit snooze, hoping to steal just a few more minutes of sleep. I’d then scramble out of bed, trying to get through the motions—brush my teeth, get dressed, check my phone—and dive straight into the demands of the day. Breakfast was an afterthought, if it even happened at all. And before I knew it, I’d already been influenced by everyone else’s expectations, starting the day on autopilot.
I didn’t realize then how this fast-paced, unfocused approach was draining my energy and setting a chaotic tone for the rest of my day. It wasn’t until I hit a breaking point that I started to understand the power of intentionality in the mornings.
Before Your Feet Hit the Floor
Now, things are different. I’ve learned that the moments before your feet hit the floor are some of the most powerful. It’s during these precious few seconds that you can set the tone for the day, recalibrate your mindset, and prepare to move through life with intention rather than reaction.
Before getting out of bed, I take a few deep breaths, allowing myself to fully wake up and settle into the present moment. I reflect on something I’m grateful for—whether it’s a person, an opportunity, or just the fact that I have another day ahead of me. This simple act of gratitude shifts my focus away from any stress or overwhelm, and I begin my day with a sense of abundance.
I also take this time to set an intention for the day. It could be something as simple as choosing to remain present, focusing on a specific goal, or making space for joy. This intention becomes my guiding light, helping me stay aligned with my values and priorities throughout the day.
Before rising, I also check in with my body, noticing how I feel physically and emotionally. Whether I’m energized or feeling a bit off, I accept where I am in that moment without judgment. This practice of self-compassion helps me show up for myself with kindness, rather than pushing myself toward perfection.
The Science Behind Morning Clarity
What’s fascinating is that research shows our minds are actually sharper first thing in the morning. Studies on cognitive function suggest that our brains are more focused and alert when we wake up, thanks to the overnight restoration process. During sleep, our brains consolidate memories and clear out toxins that accumulate throughout the day, making us more prepared for the challenges ahead. This is why the early morning is often when we have our clearest thoughts and our best ideas.
In fact, studies have found that many people experience heightened problem-solving abilities and greater creative potential during the first few hours of the day. The early morning hours are often when people feel the most productive, and our ability to focus on important tasks can be stronger before the distractions of the day begin. This cognitive boost is something we can tap into when we prioritize intentionality first thing in the morning.
By taking just a few mindful moments before getting out of bed, you can harness that mental clarity and align your day with purpose. Rather than jumping straight into the hustle of emails, phone calls, or to-do lists, you can tap into that early morning energy to set an intention, reflect on what’s important, and be present. This small shift not only improves your focus and energy but helps you create the mindset you need to move through the day with intention and clarity.
By taking these intentional moments before my feet hit the floor, I’m able to start my day with purpose, clarity, and a sense of calm. This small but powerful shift has transformed how I approach each day—and, in turn, how I approach life.
